FURNITURE FOR THE CURE
LOS ANGELES, Calif. (Aug. 3, 2009) – Furniture for the Cure pays tribute to the heroes who have braved their battle against breast cancer with a new collection of high-end designer furniture. The first among the collection, the Alyce Chair, will make its debut October 17-24 at the High Point Market in North Carolina, in The Platt Collections showroom.
To help call attention to this meaningful cause and demonstrate its firm commitment, Furniture for the Cure and The Platt Collections have chosen National Breast Cancer Awareness Month for their timely introduction of awe-inspiring pieces. This October, both organizations will initiate their ongoing efforts to help find a cure by donating ten percent of its proceeds to cancer research.
The signature awareness ribbon has been incorporated into the furniture designs, creating a functional and artful component to each piece. Elements of wood, stone and metal will be a hallmark of the collection, chosen for their beauty as well as their symbolism – Plantation Mahogany for strength, stone for individuality and silver leaf for quiet beauty.
Furniture for the Cure was founded by furniture designer Glenn Midnet, whose mother, Alyce, lost her fight against breast cancer in 1974 when Midnet was a boy. Inspired by his mother’s courage and quiet grace, Midnet became a successful interior designer and gifted furniture designer, successfully marrying his creativity with his personal cause to help find a cure for cancer. This inspiration led to the birth of the Alyce Chair.
All pieces from the Furniture for the Cure collection are manufactured by The Platt Collections – well-known among interior aficionados for their original designs and major-statement pieces. Headquartered in Los Angeles, Calif., family-owned Platt celebrates 60 years of design excellence and fine craftsmanship this year. Setting them apart are their traditional and contemporary pieces that feature sophisticated details such as painted glass, mosaic eggshell inlays and 20-step lacquer finishes.

The Alyce Chair Who would have thought that the signature cancer awareness ribbon would become a designer element? The combination of its graceful lines and Dupioni silk gives the Alyce Chair soft sophistication and glamour. The simplicity of its design makes it perfect in a dining room setting or as a stand-alone accent piece. For strength and stability the chair back is cut from a single piece of Plantation Mahogany and finished in a rich Walnut stain. The feet are accented with Brushed Nickel to lend a modern element and visual interest. The chair, shown here in pink Dupioni silk, is also available in a platinum and pearl metallic fabric, or it can be customized using the customer’s own fabric.
